Unplanned Journey; a Triumph in Life and Death
On November 8 2004, his 48th birthday, my husband of eight years Philip was diagnosed with cancer. He died five months later on April 12th 2005.
Approximately six months before Phil’s diagnosis he began to keep a journal, not so much about his feelings but notes from the personal empowerment books he was reading at the time. After the diagnosis his writing then altered to his deepest feelings about the journey he was now on. Phil wrote the most profound words of wisdom as he bargained with God and eventually surrendered and accepted his fate.In fact, he continued to write up to five days before his death.
It was Phil’s deep desire to write a book about his journey and to inspire others about the power of hope and faith. Holding onto this vision kept his life force alive, in fact, on the final day of his life after having been told that he had only days to live Phil said to me, “Tarn, dont forget to bring in my journal tomorrow as this will be good for my book”.
Within days of Phil’s death I had a deep knowing to write his book and there has been no doubt in my mind that he has walked beside me every step of the way during its formation.
Part one of “Unplanned Journey; A Triumph in Life and Death”, tells the story of Phil’s journey from diagnosis to death, his process, my own process and final acceptance of his fate. As I weave through the story his own words the reader gets to know ‘who’ Phil was and how his faith carried him though his process. Phil was a man of few words however when he spoke, they were significant and when he wrote, they were transforming and often expressed in poetry.
Part two tells the story of my own journey from the time of Phil’s death to just after his first anniversary. I place my heart on my sleeve as I share the depths of my process and healing and invite the reader to walk beside me as I learn how to find meaning from my experience and a purpose in my life when at times there appeared to be none.
Having had many issues to overcome in my life I have always kept a journal and has been a significant tool in my healing. It is these pages that make up the bulk of my story as I write of how my unresolved issues manifested themselves again.
Being a Therapist and Life Coach myself, throughout the book I share not only my faith but the practical techniques I used to pass through my darkest times, how I re-discovered Who I was and Where I was going in my life.
What commenced as a desire to fulfil Philip’s dream of writing this book has now become my greatest passion and nothing to date has given me more satisfaction in my work life. It has instilled in me a greater vision for my life and a desire to continue with my writing as I share how my life has evolved since the completion of this story.

This is one of the most moving and courageous stories I have ever read. The experience of watching the love of your life die must be extraordinarily harrowing. The fact that both Tanya and her husband documented what they were going through during his last days must surely be the staunchest gift to anyone else facing the same experience. This is a love story beyond parallel. Ann Andrews, author
I couldn’t put it down. This book is as real and raw as they come. Tanya bares all and takes you on her very personal journey through loss, darkness, and depression and shares how she crawled back into the light. Truly a celebration in the resilience of the human spirit, a lesson we can all learn from. Michele Comeau, Author/Mom/Exercise Nut/Certified Raw Food Chef

Unplanned Journey; a Triumph in Life Death, Workbook Companion
This work book is a companion to my first book, Unplanned Journey; A Triumph in Life and Death.
As I tell the story of my journey through dealing with the grief of my husband’s death in my first book I also briefly share many of the strategies and tools that assisted me during my process.
These tools I have gathered over the years during my own studies as a therapist, my own therapy sessions and during my entire healing process since my teenage years as I coped with my own issues and life in general. These have all became invaluable tools which I have continued to use in my life and could immediately draw on during my darkest hour when at times it felt that there was no point in continuing.
In addition to assisting the reader through the grieving process, many of the strategies outlined are to do with moving forward on many levels during any life transition. Throughout the pages I encourage you to once again find some meaning and purpose in your life for the future.
Some of the topics covered are: strategies for coping with the everydayness of grief; the loneliness; re-identifying with who you are now with the change in status as a result of this life transition; behavioural changes that the reader would like to make; financial concerns; possible future relationship issues; areas to be cautious of when becoming a new widow or widower. I provide a combination of life coaching and cognitive behavioural techniques for the reader to learn and place into everyday practice in order to achieve your desired results.
This book can be used for a considerable period of time and revisited many times as the life tools provided are of the nature that you do not have to be in the early days of your grieving process in order to receive benefit from this material.
The workbook also consists of various exercises and tools with space for the reader to add their own content and findings.
